The curious thing about observers is that they are both human and nonhuman. What if I told you that an Observatory is just as observant and poignant as a living, breathing, rational and cognizant being?
The narratives that born from the fact that "we don't know” guide our unconscious fear and conscious curiosity through time, bring us to the edge of observation. Observation is the purest form of reflexivity. Looking outward means mirroring micro-universes that we find within ourselves. Our collective consciousness is moving through history, through the uncertainty and confusion of future scenarios, between rational control and magical thinking. The great discoveries of humans, who can only see space through their perishable eyes, are extensions of knowledge from the observers.
The observer's body is rigid; it sees and investigates a vulnerability and malleability of time contained by space, and space softened by time. The space around the observer’s body is the same as the one it watches over; it looks different to humans but remains the same for the observer. Inside, we find structures over structures and small hands that occasionally rise to the surface to grasp a temporary piece of sky. Outside, we see an infinity of mathematical points, all conductive of human speculation.
A network of observers is positioned to watch over the celestial terrain above, they mark discoveries, communicating through lens of measurements for 4-dimensional scenarios. The tesseracts of magical thinking produce all and not enough of imagined possibilities of existence.
The project poetically constructs the act of observing, as well as the modular structure of an astronomical observatory, by creating “lenses” from resin with asymmetric and unconventional shapes, the “space” represented by the grainy sky of film photographs, and the structure of the telescope, modeled and 3D-printed, along with an artistic text that contains keys to double meanings. The technical and calculated side is carefully interwoven with the metaphorical, deconstructing physical spaces and mathematical equations in a playful manner that speaks to the speculative sensitivities of people, especially of the project's author.
The images that serve as a backdrop for the objects are created on 35mm film, taken in different years, capturing the sky in various stages. They are oversized so that the film’s grain serves as metaphorical “stars” on an almost intelligible sky, creating a poetic micro-universe. The spots from the film’s developing substances, the grain, clouds, and horizon line mark phrases from a personal artistic language. The resin as an object adheres to the print, creating a new mediated way of viewing the sky. The 3D object acts as a vector toward the artistic text, as well as a conceptual weight for the work.
